Struggling with Boundary Setting
Why am I Struggling with Boundary Setting?
Setting boundaries involves the ability to establish limits that protect one’s own well-being, time and energy. It is about understanding and communicating what is acceptable and what is not, in both personal and professional relationships.
How It Can Show Up:
Without clear boundaries, individuals often overcommit and follow the demands and expectations of others without limits. They might feel taken advantage of, overwhelmed and anxious. The inability to set appropriate boundaries often results in stressful relationships, resentment or even the loss of a sense of self and burnout.
Where It Might Originate From:
The difficulty in establishing boundaries can originate from a desire to please others, fear of rejection or feelings of guilt when asserting oneself. It might also be a learned behavior from family dynamics where it was expected to sacrifice oneself to the needs of others, or a culture where personal needs were historically undervalued.
